Newport News, VA – The excitement is building for Boys & Girls Clubs of the Virginia Peninsula’s 17th Annual Smart Smiles 5K, thanks to a dynamic new commercial titled “Leave the Cookies” that has sparked a surge in engagement. This year’s event, set for August 17, 2024, at Mariners’ Museum & Park, is already shaping up to be the best yet.

The “Leave the Cookies” commercial stars Boys & Girls Clubs of the Virginia Peninsula President & CEO Hal Smith, Chief Development Officer Madison Owens, and Body By D Gym Owner and world-renowned bodybuilder, D’Shawn Wright. Shot by CSharp Music and Media, the commercial encourages everyone to put down the cookies, get off the couch, and lace up their running shoes for a great cause.

Boys & Girls Clubs of the Virginia Peninsula, which serves more than 5,000 youth across the region, provides a safe and inclusive environment where boys and girls can learn, grow, and develop character through life-enhancing programs. The Smart Smiles 5K is a crucial fundraiser supporting these initiatives, including the Smart Smiles Dental Care and health and wellness programming.

Participants are invited to check in at 7 am, with the race starting promptly at 8 am. The new route, featuring a start and finish line in front of the Mariners’ Museum, offers scenic views and a refreshing course for all levels of runners and walkers. Registration is $30 per participant, with discounted rates for teams of three or more, military members, and students.

In addition to the race, the event will feature an end-of-race celebration with family-friendly games, a DJ, door prizes, and awards for top performers. Categories include male and female top three overall walkers and runners, age group winners, the fastest overall team, the team with the most participants, and the best team theme.

The event is a Peninsula Track Club 5K Grand Prix, Run/Walk Event, and is supported by partners such as The Levy Family, Delta Dental VA, Newport News Amateur Communications Team, Body By D Gym, Hampton University Track and Field, and the Smart Smiles 5K Committee. Early race bag pick-up is available on Friday, August 16, from 10 am to 3 pm at BGCVP’s Administrative Office, 11825 Rock Landing Dr., Chesapeake Bldg., Newport News, VA 23606.
