(Hampton, VA) November 5, 2021 – On Saturday, November 6, 2021, Boys & Girls Clubs of the Virginia Peninsula will host the official groundbreaking of its Citizens Unit renovation. Merging with Boys & Girls Clubs of Hampton Roads, the Citizens Unit, located at 1815 Shell Road in Hampton, was acquired in 2004.
President & CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of the Virginia Peninsula, Hal Smith stated, “We are extremely grateful to the City of Hampton, Hampton’s own NFL superstar, Tyrod Taylor, and an anonymous benefactor, for their financial support and friendship during this much needed renovation. As a community, we recognize the dire need for Hampton’s kids to have a safe, and fun filled place to go afterschool. The new and improved Citizens Unit will host a myriad of amazing opportunities for our kids- a brand new gym and multipurpose room, commercial grade kitchen for our “Teen Chef” program, and new rooms for life enhancing programming just to name a few. We look forward to sharing this building with members of the community and are grateful to our benefactors for investing in our community and for doing ‘whatever it takes’ for our kids.”
City of Hampton Mayor Donnie Tuck remarked, “I am so very pleased that this Boys & Girls club on Shell Road will become a quality destination for our young people. This unique partnership shows that our community can come together to support the next generation, giving them a place to play, grow and pursue their passions.”
Tyrod Taylor, quarterback for the Houston Texans and Hampton native added, “It’s great to see this type of development happening in my beloved community of Hampton. It’s one of the reason’s I started the Tyrod Taylor Foundation, to truly help bring opportunities that will help in the advancement of this city – and that often begins with our youth which the Boys & Girls Club directly serves. ”
