Helana Thomas is an individual with a passion for helping those around her, whether it be in her Club, in her school, or in her community.
Growing up in a single-parent home, Helana often felt that there was no one to turn to. With her mother working long hours to provide for her family, and her brother being hearing impaired, Helana found it difficult to communicate the emotions that she frequently bottled up inside. She began being bullied, and her self-esteem plummeted, along with the social depression and anxiety that followed.
Helana began attending the Boys and Girls Club, which gave her the support, and relationships she needed to build her self-confidence up. "All I ever wanted was a bond, all I ever wanted was someone to guide me and tell me everything would be okay." Helana is now a mentor, and friend to so many of the young women who surround her. She has taken this role seriously, and does her best to "create once in a lifetime opportunities for underprivileged youth."
Being involved allows Helana access to interact with so many different individuals. On the Club level, Helana coaches the JV cheer team. The young girls look up to her, and she mentors them with grace. Helana is also vice president of Keystone, a job in which she has planned college tours, and free events for the community. At her high school, Helana is involved in her forensics club, a varsity cheer team, is vice president of Keystone, and participates in a performing arts school. She is also very involved within the community, running a drug and alcohol awareness and prevention program, organizing back-to-school drives, and holding anti-bullying events. Helena wants to instill in the minds to each person she meets that "no matter what is going on in life, no matter what issues they have, no matter how conspicuous or discreet they are, the kids of my community will always have my support."
After high school, Helana plans on going to college to major in Business and Marketing with minors in Sociology and Psychology. She then would like to continue her education by attending a graduate program for Sociology.
